■ “Empty god CORE” KAZUKI UMEZAWA in B2OA gallery 515 west 26th street new york, new york, 10001 212.244.2579 October 9 - November 15, 2014 Reception: October 9 from 6 - 8 PM http://www.b2oa.com/kazuki-umezawa FBpage:Empty god CORE Opening Reception The perception of “god” differs according to the country or religion that one belongs to. Most Japanese people have little interest in religion. When asked whether there really is a god, most people will probably answer, “god doesn’t exist” or “I don’t know.” On the other hand, anime and videogames are extremely popular in Japan, and the characters that appear in them attract an enthusiastic following that could be described as religious. Moreover, fictional stories in Japanese anime and videogames often deal with concepts related to deities and religion. In Japan, deities and religion seem to have more reality within fictional narratives than in the real world. I collect images of characters that I am fond of on the internet to create paintings by disassembling them and reconstructing them in new ways. For me, characters are small gods. This is probably a sensation that is connected to the fact that the concept of multitudinous gods has existed since antiquity in Japan. I feel love for the ephemeral images of those beautiful characters with vividly colored hair and eyes that are consumed and disappear on a daily basis. Characters are, after all, fictional entities that are empty and vacuous. However, the cycle in which they appear and disappear is a source of inspiration for me. I am perhaps thinking of something similar to the Buddhist concept of the never-ending cycle of life and death. In my paintings, I attempt to create a new image of gods by breaking down the small empty gods into small fragments and reconstructing them.
